An 1888 steam laundry and soap factory in Milwaukee's Haymarket district, never once a hotel, is becoming a 60-room TRYP by Wyndham after years of delay.

TRYP by Wyndham Milwaukee will convert an 1888 former steam laundry and soap factory at 419 W. Vliet Street into a 60-room hotel, the brand's first in the city. Plans for the $16 million project first surfaced in 2019; financing closed in May 2026 and construction is set to begin that summer, with no opening date yet announced.

The place
419 W. Vliet Street in Milwaukee's Haymarket neighborhood, just north of downtown.
The concept
The building was constructed in 1888 by William Froehlich as a paper warehouse and almost immediately occupied by the McCullough and Dixon Steam Laundry and Soap Company, which used its upper floors for soap manufacturing. It's the oldest surviving purpose-built steam laundry building in Milwaukee and the last remaining example from the city's Late Victorian commercial-laundry boom — and it has never operated as a hotel. Developers Scott Crawford Inc. and Khalek Building Services plan a $16 million conversion into a 60-room TRYP by Wyndham, including a new three-story addition roughly matching the footprint of the historic structure, financed in part with a $10 million New Market Tax Credit allocation. Plans for a hotel here first surfaced in 2019; financing was only secured in May 2026, with construction set to begin that summer.
