The place

2-4 High Petergate, next to Bootham Bar and the medieval city walls, at the opposite end of the street from York Minster.

The concept

The building dates to around 1840 and is Grade II listed, its orange-grey brick front and timber shopfront still intact behind a 20th-century shop addition. It operated for years as the Lamb & Lion Inn before reopening under an entirely new independent name and identity, The Fat Badger, in May 2022, with 12 individually styled, four-star AA-rated en-suite rooms across the upper floors.

Dining & wellness

A pub restaurant serves British classics alongside seasonal dishes for lunch, dinner and Sunday service, with table ordering through the hotel's own app. The beer garden, looking directly onto York Minster, is one of the more sought-after outdoor spots in the city center; breakfast is included for hotel guests.
