Five years after archaeologists found a chunk of York's medieval city wall and thousands of Roman-era artefacts under the building site, Supercity's 46-suite Micklegate aparthotel has finally opened on one of York's most historic streets. Its timber-clad facade deliberately echoes the medieval houses around it, and every suite comes with its own kitchen rather than a restaurant downstairs.

The place
Micklegate is one of York's most storied thoroughfares, a steep, cobbled run linking Micklegate Bar and the medieval city walls to the river and the historic core — a five-minute walk from York railway station and under a mile from York Minster, the Shambles and the Jorvik Viking Centre. It is a heritage-conservation street lined with Georgian townhouses and independent shops rather than a hotel strip, which makes a 46-key new-build a genuinely rare insertion.
The concept
The site previously held the derelict Jinnah restaurant and a Minster Van Hire depot; both were demolished after North Star and Supercity secured planning consent in 2020. Construction started in late 2021 and was meant to deliver a 2023 opening, but excavation uncovered a stretch of York's medieval city wall and around 36,000 artefacts, some Roman, triggering a year-long archaeological dig that pushed the project back several years — Supercity has said it hopes to eventually display some of the finds on site. The finished building, designed by York-based brown + company, is a contemporary four-storey block whose jettied, wood-clad street front deliberately echoes the timber-framed medieval houses further down Micklegate, a design worked out with York City Council's conservation officers to satisfy heritage and rooftop-visibility constraints from the city walls. Inside, suites run from 25 sqm studios to 45 sqm executive one-beds with sofa beds, each with a full kitchen, washer/dryer and Chromecast TV.
Dining & wellness
This is a self-catering aparthotel rather than a restaurant hotel: every suite has its own equipped kitchen (oven, hob, dishwasher, fridge), so there is no in-house restaurant or bar. Services are pared back to 24-hour reception, weekly housekeeping and lift access to all floors, in keeping with Supercity's longer-stay, apartment-first format.
