Sandman Signature Sheffield Quays Hotel relaunched in 2025 after an 18-month renovation of the former Best Western Plus Sheffield Quays, on the three-acre Victoria Quays site Canadian owner Northland Properties bought in 2022. It's Sandman Hotel Group's fifth UK hotel and its first in Sheffield, with all 128 existing rooms refurbished, a new restaurant in the building's restored Victorian arches, and a further 32 rooms due by summer 2026.

The place

Victoria Quays, Sheffield, a six-storey building set above restored Grade II-listed 1855 canal arches, on the three-acre former Best Western site.

The concept

The building has changed flags repeatedly: it operated as a Stakis hotel, then a Sheffield Hilton, then Best Western Plus Sheffield Quays Hotel, before Canadian firm Northland Properties, owner of Sandman Hotel Group, bought the three-acre site in June 2022 and rebranded it as Sandman Signature Sheffield Quays, the group's fifth UK hotel alongside existing properties in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Gatwick and Newcastle. An 18-month renovation beginning November 2023 fully refurbished all 128 existing bedrooms and moved the bar and restaurant down into the building's restored Victorian arches; a further 32 bedrooms with kitchenettes and balconies are due by summer 2026, bringing the total to 160.

Dining & wellness

Tavern on The Quays, a roughly 5,000-square-foot pub-style restaurant seating 90 with a private 40-person dining room, opened in the restored arches in September 2025. Leisure facilities have been rebranded Signature Spa & Leisure, with an expanded fitness suite and a 20-metre heated pool, sauna and steam room due further updates through 2026.

I’ve stayed here a number of times for work, and every time the same high standards have been met without fail. Every time the staff are incredibly friendly and cannot do enough for you. The rooms are always immaculate, and the bar/restaurant space is genuinely brilliant. There are few dedicated restaurants that manage to reach this level of quality and service. I couldn’t name a single one in my area to be truthful. I’ve had countless meals and stays, and never had a bad experience. Numerous staff have given their names for review etc, but every single one of the waiting staff have been incredibly friendly and talented. The hotel and its staff should genuinely be proud of themselves.

Let down by poor customer service. Stayed here for two nights, fairly reasonable sized group booking. We had rung up earlier in the week to check about arriving early, 3pm check in and was told if it was significantly early it would incur a £15 charge (fair enough) but half hour or so would be fine. We arrived at 2.51pm and was told our four double rooms were not ready and were still being prepared!!! (really?) but we could pay £15 for the now, 7 mins early we were!! The receptionist would budge either and was just a bit rude about it, so great start to out stay, Oh and the reception looked like a building site. We then checked in just after 3pm, now stuck in a large queue, it took way to long to complete, calling out more staff to assist would have been good. We got booked in and the rooms were very nice, would have preferred a simple ceiling light on a switch rather than ambient multi coloured lighting around the beds. Well equipped rooms with a TV, coffee machine, fridge, plenty of hangers, very good actually. For £270 for two nights, two sharing with breakfast I would have appreciated a complimentary bottle of water in the fridge. As a group we had drinks in the hotel bar, they were reasonably priced and the service here was good. Breakfast was very good and the service here was excellent. The Spa facilities downstairs were ok, I was hoping the jacuzzi had been reinstalled after our previous stays but it has not, pool was nice, sauna and steam room was also good. Parking is good but it did get filled up with people using the gym.

From start to finish we were treated exceptionally well, from check in, to the bar, to breakfast. The suite was very clean and comfortable with lots of lovely little touches and great to have a balcony in the hot weather. A couple of minor points were missing with the breakfast but it didn't affect our stay. Fantastic location as well with great views of the river

I have stayed at this hotel for several weeks now, and I thoroughly enjoy coming here, especially for work purposes. It truly feels like a home away from home. I would like to give special recognition to one gentleman for the excellent service he provided throughout my stay. His attention to detail and commitment to ensuring I was well looked after did not go unnoticed. That person is Veer at the front desk. He always has a smile and consistently goes above and beyond to maintain the high standards of the hotel. I truly appreciate his efforts. Furthermore, the rooms are fabulous—I cannot fault them at all. The only minor point I would mention is that to have your room cleaned, you need to request it at the front desk in the morning. It may be more convenient to have a sign for the door instead, especially when the front desk is busy. Overall, I cannot fault this hotel whatsoever. Once again, thank you very much, Veer, for going above and beyond during my stay. I will certainly be returning.

New bathroom is very nice and modern. Only a nightlight or a socket for it is missing. The socket behind the mirror doesn't provide enough space for a nightlight, also it is off when you shut down the light. The room could need some more places for storing your clothes when you stay for a couple of nights as we did. Housekeeping is only on demand, but this is announced at the check in. Room comes with a fridge which is a big plus on warmer days. We understand and appreciate renovations of the hotel, although this should be mentioned before the booking. What is absolutely not acceptable and ruined one day of our vacation is that we were not informed the water would be shut down for 4 1/2 hours one day. We could not shower, had to boil water for brushing teeth with the kettle and had to leave the room with a very uncomfortable feeling. We asked to speak to the management, but the manager was not available and never returned our wish for communication. This is very poorly behaviour.
