Three years on, the trading company remains active on paper but the project has gone quiet in public view. It's a case worth watching rather than one to bank on.

The place
The address is 39-40 High Street in Bristol's Old City, next to St Nicholas Market and overlooking Castle Park — a dense, historic pocket of the centre that has struggled to find a stable use for this particular building for the better part of a decade.
The concept
The project would convert a building that spent roughly ten years vacant, most recently used as an arts venue and, before that, occupied by squatters, into what would be its first-ever spell as a hotel. Bristol restaurant group Mugshot Restaurants — behind Mugshot, The Library and Asian BBQ & Hotpot, all on St Nicholas Street — signed a 25-year lease with Bristol City Council in 2023 to restore the building, which retains a 1930s lift, into nine boutique rooms.
