Drifter Christchurch
A 1919 wool warehouse reborn as Christchurch's first hotel-hostel hybrid.
Open · June 2024
Drifter Christchurch opened in June 2024 inside the heritage Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company Building on Lichfield Street, converting a 1919 structure into a hotel for the first time. The 95-room hybrid property mixes private suites with hostel-style bunk rooms around communal wellness, cinema and co-working spaces, aimed at travellers after a social, design-led stay rather than a conventional hotel room.

The place
At 96 Lichfield Street in central Christchurch, inside the former Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company Building, a 1919 William Henry Gummer design faced in rare Tākaka marble.
The concept
Drifter is the first hotel from the Leisure Accommodation Collective's 'hybrid' concept, opened in June 2024 inside a heritage building that had never previously operated as a hotel and required structural strengthening and carbon-wrapping before conversion. Interiors studio CTRL Space led the retrofit, drawing on Bauhaus and Modernist principles and a deliberate colour hierarchy — bolder tones in public ground-floor spaces, muted tones in private rooms. Across five floors, the property mixes 95 rooms, from private suites to shared bunk rooms, with wellness studios, a cinema room, social lounges, a library, outdoor courtyards and a co-working space called the Revel Room, aiming to sleep up to 300 guests at any one time. It is a deliberately hybrid format, sitting between a design hotel and a social hostel rather than choosing one or the other.
Dining & wellness
A street-level restaurant and bar opened in August 2024, alongside guest kitchen facilities for self-catering; further dining specifics are not independently confirmed.
