The place

Corner of Colombo and Armagh streets, opposite Victoria Square in the Christchurch CBD — a site where Christchurch's first hotel, The Golden Fleece, opened in 1851.

The concept

A conversion of the earthquake-damaged Forsyth Barr office tower — never previously a hotel — into IHG's Crowne Plaza brand, developed by MC Christchurch Holdings and opened in June 2017 as part of the city's post-earthquake CBD rebuild. At 204 rooms it is one of the largest upscale hotels in central Christchurch, timed to add conference and meeting capacity ahead of the city's planned Convention Centre.

Dining & wellness

Market Place restaurant and bar, Café 1851 serving Mojo coffee, Social Wine Bar, and four event spaces built around an interactive marketplace dining concept.
