TRYP by Wyndham Wellington

TRYP by Wyndham Wellington opened in early 2023 inside a heritage-listed art deco building at 15 Tory Street in Te Aro, its first use as a hotel. The 77-room property includes studios, classic rooms and Penthouse 601, which the operator markets as New Zealand's largest hotel penthouse.

The place

The address is 15 Tory Street, one block east of the Tākina convention centre and one block west of Courtenay Place. Cuba Street's bars and restaurants are about five minutes on foot, the waterfront walk and Wellington station are close, and the airport is a short drive away.

The concept

The building was restored in an art deco style that the operator describes as evoking 1920s Chicago. Wyndham announced the project in November 2020 as a 76-room hotel with conference space, a fitness room and a rooftop deck and spa, targeting March 2022. It opened close to a year later with 77 rooms.

Penthouse 601 is the headline unit. Operator material puts it at more than 370 square meters, while Wellington's tourism listing gives 360, and it sleeps up to eight in four king bedrooms with a lounge and dining area, a full kitchen and a covered barbecue area.

Suites have a kitchen and laundry facilities. Standard rooms carry a mini fridge, tea and coffee maker, sitting area and desk.

Dining & wellness

There is no restaurant. The Speakeasy Lounge and Bar is open daily from 7am to 10pm, with complimentary coffee and tea.

A 24-hour gym is on site, along with one meeting room of 22 square meters for up to 10 people. Listings mention a rooftop deck and seating area with city views; the hotel's own page does not describe a spa.
