The place

The hotel sits on Westgate Street in the heart of Cardiff city centre, directly across from Principality Stadium, occupying two adjoining landmark buildings: the city's former Head Post Office, built in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the neighbouring Old County Court.

The concept

The Parkgate is a joint venture between property developer Rightacres, the Welsh Rugby Union and The Celtic Collection (the group behind Celtic Manor Resort), built around the adaptive reuse of two turn-of-the-century civic buildings rather than new construction. The two-year redevelopment, with interiors by Goddard Littlefair, kept as much of the original fabric as possible — ornate ceilings, grand staircases, postal-hall proportions — and layered in an art deco-inflected scheme that nods to the buildings' Edwardian bones while functioning as a contemporary luxury hotel. The hotel opened its doors on 25 October 2021, timed deliberately to coincide with the Autumn Nations rugby series, underscoring its close relationship with the stadium and with Welsh rugby culture — a link reinforced by event spaces named the Postmaster Suite and the Telegraph Room. It was named Hotel of the Year for Wales at the 2024 AA Hospitality Awards.

Dining & wellness

Dining centres on The Sorting Room, an all-day restaurant and bar with an open theatre kitchen, plus a dedicated afternoon-tea lounge. The rooftop Spa at The Parkgate offers Elemis treatments, a herbal steam experience, a nail salon and a hydrotherapy infinity pool with city views, alongside a fitness centre.
