A 1906 Samuel Maclure manor in Esquimalt, heritage-designated in 2012, restored over a decade into a 28-room hotel with a wood-fired restaurant and a spa.
Rosemead House reopened in October 2025 in Victoria's Esquimalt neighborhood, after a decade-long, roughly $25 million restoration of a 1906 Tudor Revival manor that had operated as the Olde English Inn until 2010. It has 28 rooms.
It is the only Canadian entry on Condé Nast Traveller's 2026 Hot List, and Travel + Leisure also reviewed it among new hotels.
The hotel stands at 429 Lampson Street, in Esquimalt, the township next to downtown Victoria on Vancouver Island. The property includes a courtyard that is used for weddings.
The concept
The manor was built in 1906 for Thomas Harry Slater, a Yorkshire-born realtor and developer, and credited to the Victoria architect Samuel Maclure. One local newspaper gives 1909 instead, but most sources say 1906. It was designated heritage in 2012. Operating as the Olde English Inn from 1946 until it closed in 2010, it was bought by Vancouver developer Aragon Properties in 2015, for what is the company's first venture in hospitality.
Restoration work covered the post-and-beam structure, the leaded-glass windows and the millwork. Founder Lenny Moy sourced antiques at auctions in the United Kingdom and calls the approach History Meets Discovery. Karen Wichert is the designer.
The 28 rooms are each different, designed to read as an English manor, with clawfoot tubs, views of Victoria and replicas of works by painters including Rembrandt. The hotel groups them in the Manor Collection, which includes the Windsor Retreat and the Garden Parlour.
Dining & wellness
Janevca Kitchen & Lounge, which opened in October 2024 ahead of the hotel, has a 130-seat dining room and a 40-seat lounge with an open kitchen. The name combines the names of Moy's children. Chef Andrea Alridge, Vancouver-born and a Top Chef Canada alumna, draws on Filipino and Jamaican family cooking and on her Italian training: scallop crudo with pyanggang sauce, wood-grilled bone-in pork chop, Salt Spring Island lamb, wood-fired pizza. Rob Scales, formerly of Il Terrazzo, directs food and beverage.
Janevca was named Best New Restaurant of 2025 by YAM Magazine. Salt & Ivy is the hotel's spa, though its treatment menu is not detailed in the sources consulted.
