Hunter Street runs through the middle of the old commercial centre, and the East End is where the city's older retail buildings are being given new uses.
The concept The building housed Scotts Limited before David Jones took it over as a department store. QT, a designer hotel collection, chose to keep the heritage-listed structure rather than build new. The group's other hotels are in large cities, which makes Newcastle the exception in its portfolio.
Dining & wellness The hotel's own website lists the current outlets, and its restaurant and bar lineup has not been confirmed independently for this guide.
Our take The hotel suits visitors who want a design-led address in the East End and within walking distance of the commercial centre. Rooms start around 200 Australian dollars.

As first-time visitors, we couldn't have asked for a better long weekend at QT. The anniversary surprise was such a thoughtful touch and truly made our stay extra special. We were so appreciative of the bottle of Prosecco, the balloons, and the lovely handwritten note from the staff.
The room was cosy, comfortable, and excellent value for money. One of the highlights was spending time at the rooftop bar watching the sunset plus the atmosphere was brilliant.
A big thank you to the team for going above and beyond to make our stay memorable. We felt genuinely welcomed and looked after. We will definitely be back and highly recommend QT to anyone looking for a fun, stylish getaway with exceptional service.
The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. The kingsize room was a good size and very well equipped, with a luxurious overall feel. Lovely balcony with a great view. The room only lost marks for the quality of the bed linen, which was not very breathable and left me feeling clammy. I’d expect cotton/down for the price. The food and drink was good. A nice view from the rooftop, but I’d recommend going downstairs rather than the rooftop for a more down-to-earth and fuss-free experience. If insisting on table service, I’d make sure to be as speedy and attentive as possible.
Stayed for two nights. The bedroom was lovely and clean and had everything we needed. The hotel left balloons and a bottle of wine in our room as we told them we were celebrating our honeymoon, so nice! Dyson hairdryer was a real treat. Breakfast to order was such a nice touch, it was really fresh and delicious. Staff were so lovely and kind. Rooftop bar was great, what a vibe!
A great little hotel, located close to the harbour, beaches and the light rail. We stayed in Room 708; modern, comfy bed, huge bath and we got a great sunset view. We had a fantastic breakfast at Jana; the chilli scrambled was amazing. The rooftop bar is worth a visit too!
Janine van den Tillaart · 5/5 A last minute booking just for 1 night. Very well run with staff who were sharp & on the ball - we enjoyed all interactions with the helpful staff. This didn’t match our experience prior to check in, which is why I didn’t give 5 stars. When I checked in online the check in form asked for special requests. I provided several, asking about parking & arranging a firm pillow. No reply & no follow up. Scrap that section if you’re not going to respond. Before arriving, I called to check on parking arrangements - no answer, despite trying many times to get through on all lines.
Other than that, being there in person made up for the lack of response. The restaurant looks great, & the room & hotel decor is unique & fun. Bed was excellent & I appreciated all the hooks in the bathroom & room entry area - 1st hotel that has exceeded my expectations when it comes to hanging options 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The online check in /check out facility is cool. Parking ended up being easy too.
