In Richmond's Shockoe Slip, the independently run Berkeley Hotel — a fixture of the district since 1988 — has joined Hilton's new Outset Collection soft brand after a full interior renovation. Reopened in May 2026 as The Berkeley Richmond, the 55-room hotel debuts Parlor Bistro, a restaurant from local couple Adam and Luong Betz pairing American comfort food with Vietnamese influences.

The place

1200 E. Cary Street, at 12th Street, on the western edge of Shockoe Slip — Richmond's historic warehouse district, built up around the Kanawha Canal in the 17th century and now a cluster of restaurants, bars and shops in restored brick buildings. The Berkeley's 1988 opening is credited with helping revitalize the district.

The concept

The château-inspired 19th-century red-brick building, named for England's Berkeley Castle and Virginia's Berkeley Plantation, has been Richmond's benchmark independent boutique hotel since 1988. Owner-operator Kalyan Hospitality took it through a full interior renovation — new lobby, reception, lounge furniture and a bronze-and-dark-wood palette with sculptural lighting — and moved it from independent status into Outset Collection, the new Hilton soft brand built for hotels with a strong existing identity, launched in May 2026.

Dining & wellness

Parlor Bistro, the hotel's new in-house restaurant run by Richmond couple Adam and Luong Betz, blends American comfort food with Vietnamese influences — including a pork banh mi — alongside a Vietnamese-origin coffee program; service currently covers breakfast and lunch, with dinner to follow. The Governor's Suite and its adjoining Parlor offer floor-to-ceiling city views and two private terraces, alongside intimate meeting space.
