No.4 Carlton occupies a townhouse on Carlton Crescent in Southampton, close to Bedford Place. It has nine rooms and suites and is independent, not part of any chain.
The building was listed Grade II on 14 July 1953 and dates from around 1830.
Carlton Crescent is a street of listed buildings. Numbers 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 30 to 32 and 33 all carry the same Grade II status, along with Lampugh House and the former Ordnance Survey offices.

The concept
The listing describes a three-storey building, stuccoed, under a hipped slate roof with a wide eaves cornice. A moulded cornice runs above the ground floor, carried on pairs of pilasters at each corner and projecting over the entrance, where four engaged Doric columns frame the door. The first-floor windows have moulded surrounds, and the doorcase holds plain double doors with niches on each side.
The hotel says each of its nine rooms and suites was designed to reflect the architecture and character of the listed building, with current technology and luxury bedding. Nespresso machines are reported in the rooms. Staff handle restaurant bookings and transport.
Dining & wellness
There is no restaurant. A complimentary continental breakfast is served in the room, and the team books tables elsewhere in the city on request.
