The place

The hotel sits on Millbay Road in Plymouth city centre, less than a 10-minute walk from Plymouth Hoe and the waterfront, with nearby bars, restaurants and cafés on its doorstep.

The concept

Originally built in 1865, the New Continental is one of Plymouth's oldest operating hotels. Elevate Hotels Plymouth Ltd acquired the property and will convert it into Hilton's Tapestry Collection under a franchise agreement, joining a small roster of UK regional Tapestry hotels that already includes Dover, York, Portrush and St Albans. The project is a full renovation of an existing, currently operating hotel rather than new construction: Elevate's managing director Al Malik has framed the acquisition around 'strong trading fundamentals and significant upside potential' in the existing asset rather than a ground-up rebuild.

Dining & wellness

The renovated hotel is planned to include meeting facilities, a fitness centre, and a restaurant and bar, though specific F&B concepts and operators have not been disclosed.

Everything was pretty okay, but nothing was great or fantastic. The location is a bonus because it's very close to the centre. Reasonable parking at £7 per day. Our room was just fine. There were stains all over the carpet, the furniture was pretty outdated, the duvet had a rip in it. There was a TV, although very small. Our room was on the side of the busy road, meaning you could hear quite loudly the busy nightlife from the Spoons on the weekend. The Wi-Fi kept logging you out after about 12 hours or after you left the premisis, and took ages to let you back in. It was also rather slow. There is a gym and pool, although you have to check in with a receptionist to use it and the hours are fine but not great if you're out all day and want to use it late at night (closes at 8pm). We found the hallways rather narrow with a lot of doors you had to keep opening to get to the room, which was quite awkward with luggage as the doors liked to swing back at you pretty quickly after opening. For the price, it's acceptable, but there's a lot of things I think could definitely be better.

I had to leave a review as soon as I could for the amazing staff at the hotel! Shout out to the receptionist (Hariet) who was super nice and friendly. The hotel is not very far from the city centre and also the Plymouth Hoe, there's parking inside at a small fee of £7 per night and the rooms are very nice and clean too!

Booked a single room at £109 a night, the room was not worth the price, really needs updating, had a small smart TV but was hotel locked so couldn't use it as a smart tv, luckily I install AV equipment so could easily unlock it but thats not the point, room was basically in the roof and really cramped, it was also really hot and stuffy, found it hard to fall asleep especially with the 2 bits of tissue paper they call pillows, also the changing rooms for the swimming pool stunk of stale urine and loomed lime they hadn't been cleaned for days, on the plus note the restaurant was amazing, and so much cheaper than I thought it was going to be, waitress and the staff in general were spot on, could not fault the service, the hotel in general needs an update, the room I was in definitely did not match the price, maybe £55-60 but then again the hotel is situated right between the hoe and the city centre so I can see why the price is what it is, Would I stay here again? Yes I would, but the prices need to be adjusted.

I regularly visit Plymouth and always wanted to stay here as I love traditional hotels. Great stay, lovely single room, fully equipped and spotlessly clean. All the staff I met were really good, friendly and helpful. Looking forward to my next visit!

I really love this hotel, firstly the staff are warm, friendly and helpful without being too over the top. Their gym is well equipped. The dinner experience at Steve's brasserie was 10/10 I am very much looking forward to coming back here next time. The young waitress, Chloe, was the perfect host, I was well cared for throughout and she created a lovely relaxed atmosphere in the place. The food was definitely cooked fresh - the sea bream was soft, flaky and juicy with a crispy skin, the lemon potatoes were amazing and veg was slightly al dente which was lovely. I didn't wait very long for anything - my drink came out straight away and the main perhaps only 15 mins or so. I followed this with a sticky toffee pudding which was perfectly light and very tasty - served with the best ice cream I have ever had (would love to know where they get it from please!). Yes the rooms are slightly dated but they are still very comfortable and come with all the key amenities, big TV etc, a bath (big plus) and heating controls are easy to work. The breakfast is nice - reasonable choice and service is quick. Location wise is perfect for my work too. Will always come back! Thanks all.
