Hotel Gotham Newcastle

Hotel Gotham Newcastle opened in November 2025 inside a Grade II-listed fire and police station on Pilgrim Street, billed as the North East of England's first five-star hotel. The first phase has 57 bedrooms, six of them suites. A second phase will bring the total to 90.

The place

The hotel occupies the former fire and police station on Pilgrim Street, in Newcastle city centre, built in 1931-33 and listed Grade II. It forms part of the wider Pilgrim Street scheme being developed by Taras, with Avison Young advising.

The adjoining former police station and magistrates court is the building earmarked for the second phase.

The concept

The 1931-33 building was designed by Cackett, Burns Dick & Mackellar. Architect Ryder handled the conversion, and Squid.inc designed the interiors, which lean on Art Deco theatricality while keeping artefacts from the building's civic past.

The operator is Bespoke Group, parent company of Hotel Gotham, which was lined up early after planning approval was granted in February 2024. Trade press had pointed to a September 2025 opening; the doors opened in November.

Phase two means converting the adjacent police station and magistrates court. Place North East reported on 15 November 2025 that work would begin in 2026, and that the finished hotel would hold 90 bedrooms. No investment figure or contractor has been published.

Dining & wellness

Siren is the hotel's restaurant. Fire is a bar set into the original engine room, with red and black decor and large windows that were once the fire engines' garage doors. Club Brass is a members' club across two floors, behind a velvet curtain.
