The place
The corner of Crown and Church streets in Wollongong's CBD, on the combined site of the demolished City Diggers Club and the former David Jones department store, about an hour south of Sydney.
The concept
The $229 million Globe redevelopment, approved by the Southern Regional Planning Panel, is a genuine ground-up build replacing a demolished RSL/Diggers club and a former department store — not a renovation or a rebrand of an operating hotel. Beyond the hotel tower, the precinct includes a new office building of more than 8,300 square meters and a rebuilt club and motel. Wollongong-based ADM Architects, led by director Angelo Di Martino, designed the project with Sydney firm Jackson Teece; Di Martino has said the landmark corner site 'allowed us to push the boundaries of architectural innovation, merging form and function to create an iconic masterpiece.' The hotel component has already been revised upward once: council initially cleared a 15-storey, 55-metre tower, then later approved raising the maximum height to 78.2 metres, opening the door to a hotel of up to 262 rooms under later planning documents — though 236 rooms remains the figure used across most reporting and is what this guide tracks pending a final design. No hotel brand, operator or property name has been announced; 'The Globe' used here is the precinct's project name, not a confirmed hotel name.
Dining & wellness
A rooftop pool and bar — reported under the working name 'Sky Bar' and described as open to the public, not just hotel guests — is the only food-and-beverage concept confirmed so far. No restaurant, chef or operator has been named.
