Criterion Hotel Napier occupies a heritage-listed 1932 Spanish Mission building, rebuilt by architect E. A. Williams after the catastrophic 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake destroyed the original 1874 hotel on the same site. The 20-room hotel is part of Napier's celebrated Art Deco streetscape.

The place

The concept
The first Criterion Hotel opened on this site in March 1874 and was destroyed in the catastrophic 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Local architect E. A. Williams designed its 1932 replacement, one of Napier's best-known Spanish Mission facades, built by contractor W. M. Angus. The building is listed on the New Zealand Heritage List (No. 1128).
