We just got back from a 4 night stay at the SLS Cancun. We booked through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts and received a wonderful room upgrade at check in. The room was very spacious with two full bathrooms and beautiful ocean view. The resort is in a luxury gated community which was tremendously safe and extremely walkable. There were plenty of nice restaurants in the open air mall / harbor area which was also a plus.
The breakfast buffet was incredible. The food was fresh and beautifully displayed. Every morning we were greeted with smiles and great service.
At the pool we had comfortable loungers and umbrellas and the pool was perfect temperature with great view of the turquoise ocean water. Jorge was our daily server and he was incredible in his friendliness and timeliness of getting our drinks and food.
The only negative was the ocean which is not the fault of the hotel. They made significant efforts to eliminate the seaweed but this time of year brings warm ocean temperatures and the seaweed is a big problem here. We did not dare enter the water. The only other negative is that most of the resort is dedicated to the residents and not hotel guests. But again, I don’t fault the hotel for this. If I was a resident there then I would appreciate that as well.
Overall, an excellent experience. I would most definitely return for a future visit.
Matthias Wiederholz · 5/5 I expected much more from the SLS Hotel Cancun, especially considering it markets itself as a luxury hotel and is part of the Chase Edit collection. I have stayed at several other Chase Sapphire Edit properties and have always had excellent experiences. Unfortunately, the level of service and overall experience fell short of luxury standards.
I will start with one positive: our room was beautiful, modern, and very clean. It was by far the best part of our stay. Unfortunately, everything else was disappointing. Customer service was consistently lacking throughout our stay. At the bar, we were the only guests waiting, yet we stood there without a single staff member acknowledging us or asking us if we needed anything. We also asked for a room service menu, only to be told there was none available. Housekeeping did not consistently restock bottled water. The dining experience was another major disappointment. At the beachfront restaurant, we were seated and then informed that if we didn't place our order within 10 minutes, the kitchen would be closing at 7:30 p.m. on a Friday evening which left us feeling rushed. The food was also inedible. Another frustration was a large portion of the property is private residences. We were told we could not use the gym because was reserved exclusively for residents. The restriction was never disclosed before our stay and made us feel like second-class guests despite paying luxury hotel rates. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation, be aware that loud music plays around the pool throughout the day. While the property itself is attractive and the rooms are excellent, luxury is about more than appearances.
I still am in shock that SLS is a “five star” hotel. I chose SLS Cancún because it is an “Edit” hotel through my Chase Reserve credit card. While the room and view were stunning, the staff was overall inattentive and cold. We often waited outside their restaurant Cleo either for breakfast or once for dinner with multiple people walking by but no one asking if we needed a table. When sitting at the pool, it was hard to track anyone for a towel and when I finally got one, I was only given one which I used to spread on the pool chair because it looked dirty and I didn’t want to sit directly on it. Whether we were walking in the front door or walking through the halls, people did not seem to want to greet us or acknowledge us which made me feel unwanted. There was no menu in our room for room service and when the room was cleaned, they did not restock the bottles of water or nespresso coffee pods. I also felt it was strange there was only one coffee cup, one espresso cup and one coffee pod but there’s more than one person occupying the room so only one of you can have a coffee in the morning. Breakfast also started late at 7:30 am so if you have an excursion, you cannot have breakfast prior to leaving. Additionally, the food at the restaurant was disappointing which is unfortunate because the hotel is far from the hotel zone (a 30 min taxi drive). We had to take a taxi for lunch and dinner which can add up and be inconvenient. Finally, the beach was not impressive. It’s a small stretch and there’s not much area to walk on or enjoy. I do not recommend staying here even if you have chase benefits. While the view and room is enticing, the experience was unsatisfactory.
Unfriendly service, misleading information, and disappointing experience as an Accor member.
My stay at this hotel was unfortunately far below expectations, especially for an Accor 5* property. The staff at the reception came across as unfriendly and somewhat arrogant from the moment I arrived. On top of that, the security deposit required was almost double the nightly room rate, which I have never experienced at any other hotel.
The welcome drink voucher — which can normally be redeemed at any bar or restaurant in Accor hotels at any time — was heavily restricted here. It could only be used either during a restaurant visit or between 6–8 PM at the indoor bar. It wasn’t even valid at the pool or beach bar. I’ve never encountered such limitations anywhere else.
As an Accor member, I also felt very undervalued. No room upgrade, no gesture of recognition — nothing. Instead, my room had visible stains on the couch, and the view was directly facing the parking lot. When I asked about a different room, I was told the hotel was “fully booked,” even though the property looked quite empty and many rooms were clearly unoccupied.
Another disappointing detail: the hotel only provides two coffee capsules and two bottles of water for the entire stay, not per day. This is far below the standard of every other Accor hotel I’ve stayed at, where these amenities are replenished daily for free.
Another misleading aspect: the hotel advertises a large pool, but that pool actually belongs to the SLS Residences, not the hotel. The hotel itself only has a small pool. The building has many floors, but only the first four belong to the hotel — everything above is part of the residences.
Overall, the experience felt disappointing, restrictive, and not at all up to Accor 5* standards. I left feeling unappreciated as a loyal customer, and I would not choose this property again.
Overall, we had a good stay at SLS Cancun, but there are several things that could be improved. The rooms are nice, but they are starting to show some wear and tear. One thing that surprised me was that there are no hooks or hangers for towels in the bathroom. The room has a Nespresso machine, but there was no spoon or anything to stir milk or sugar. No glasses to pour drinks.
We had an issue with our reservation at check-in. Instead of helping us find a solution, even if it meant paying extra, the hotel had my family waiting for more than an hour while I spent another hour dealing with Chase Travel. This should have been resolved at check-in instead of making the guest figure it out.
The staff was always courteous, but service often felt slow. Pool service could take a while, and sometimes it seemed like employees were waiting for instructions before doing anything. There were a lot of staff members around, but not always working efficiently. At breakfast, managers were visibly directing staff in front of us and guests, including telling them when to clear plates.
One thing I noticed is that if you need something done, find one of the supervisors in the pink shirts. They seemed to know what was going on and were able to solve problems quickly. The hotel pool is great. Be aware that access to the beach can change, so double-check what is included with your stay. Beach access is limited, with only a small section available while much of the area feels private. All outdoor furniture is impacted by weather so they look alright and seems getting old.
If you like watching the sunrise, be prepared to see people still drinking at outdoor common areas. Several cute dogs around and people smoking by the pool.
Breakfast was okay. Many of the prepared dishes seemed a little too liquid and not much flavors. You are 10 minutes away front the marina mall for more food options.
Another thing that could be improved is communication. We received very little information about the hotel’s amenities during check-in.
Overall, the property is nice, the staff is friendly, and we enjoyed our stay. However, the service experience and problem resolution need improvement to match the level of the hotel.
