We track one recent hotel in Pasadena: the AC Hotel Pasadena, a 194-room Marriott property that opened in April 2025 at Colorado Boulevard and Madison Avenue. The city has far more places to stay than that, many of them older and some of them famous, but a new hotel of this size is rare in a place whose center was laid out more than a century ago and whose historic districts are protected.
Pasadena sits about ten miles north-east of downtown Los Angeles, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. It is a separate city with its own city hall, its own school district and a strong sense that it is not a suburb. Most visitors know it for two things, the Rose Parade on New Year's morning and the Rose Bowl stadium, and the rest of the year it is a place for architecture, museums, gardens and long restaurant lunches.
What to do
A weekend in Pasadena
Start with Old Pasadena, the restored commercial district around Colorado Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue. The brick buildings date from the 1890s to the 1920s, and after decades of decline the blocks were revived from the 1980s as a pedestrian-friendly area of restaurants, bookshops and independent stores. It is the easiest place to walk without a plan. Metro designates Memorial Park as the A Line station closest to it. For lunch, Visit Pasadena's food pages list Agnes Restaurant and Cheesery, along with a boba trail, speakeasies, bakeries and a long run of brunch spots.
Spend the next morning on the arts and crafts houses that Pasadena is known for. The Gamble House, at 4 Westmoreland Place, was designed by Charles and Henry Greene and finished in 1908. It can only be seen on a guided tour, offered Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday, and the house recommends booking ahead; in summer it also opens on selected Friday evenings. The Greene brothers built mostly in teak, redwood and oak, with deep eaves and exposed joinery, and the house remains the reference point for American arts and crafts architecture.
The Norton Simon Museum, at 411 West Colorado Boulevard, holds European paintings and South Asian sculpture assembled by the industrialist Norton Simon. By its published schedule it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, opens at noon, and stays open until 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (5 p.m. on the other days). Adult admission was $20 at the last published rate, and the first Friday evening of each month has been free, so check the museum's site before building a day around it.
For a walk with a view, the Colorado Street Bridge crosses the Arroyo Seco, the dry river canyon on the city's west side. The name means dry gulch in Spanish, and Visit Pasadena credits it to the explorer Gaspar de Portola. Work began in July 1912 and the bridge opened in December 1913: a Beaux-Arts concrete arch 1,467 feet long and roughly 150 feet above the canyon floor, designed by Waddell & Harrington and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. It has a sidewalk, with seating alcoves, and the arroyo below is where the Rose Bowl sits.
A full week
A longer stay allows the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in neighboring San Marino, a short drive away. It opens at 10 a.m., closes on Tuesdays, and asks for timed reservations at weekends and on holidays; the first Thursday of the month is a free day, but those tickets must be reserved in advance and are released in batches that can sell out. The grounds are large enough to fill a day.
Caltech, the science and engineering university, has a campus of Spanish and Mediterranean revival buildings in the middle of the city. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory sits just outside the city limits in the foothills. It held a free open house on 10 and 11 October 2026 for its 90th anniversary, with timed tickets that disappeared within minutes in previous years; outside those weekends, visits depend on reservations made with the laboratory's public services office.
The Pasadena Playhouse, at 39 South El Molino Avenue, is the other reason to stay for an evening. The Spanish Colonial Revival theater by Elmer Grey dates from 1924 to 1925, seats 686, and was named the State Theatre of California by the legislature in 1937. It received the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2023.
Add a hike in the San Gabriel Mountains, though conditions have changed since the Eaton Fire. It started on 7 January 2025 above Eaton Canyon and was driven by Santa Ana winds into Altadena and the northern edge of Pasadena. It destroyed more than 9,000 structures and killed 19 people, and it also destroyed the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. Check the status of any trail with the land manager before driving up.
If the date allows, the Rose Bowl Flea Market takes place on the second Sunday of each month, with general admission from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are sold online. The next dates are 8 November, 13 December and 10 January 2027.
Where to stay
Playhouse Village
AC Hotel Pasadena is the newest hotel in the city that we track. It opened in early April 2025 with a celebration on 16 April, in Playhouse Village, the district east of Old Pasadena named after the theater. Marriott's listing gives the address as 19 South Madison Avenue; a contractor's completion notice uses 550 East Colorado Boulevard, the same corner building. The hotel has 194 rooms, more than 10,500 square feet of meeting space, a streetside lounge and a rooftop bar and restaurant.
Visit Pasadena names Lake Station as the A Line stop for the Playhouse District, while the Pasadena Playhouse itself describes the walk from Memorial Park Station as about 15 minutes. From Madison Avenue, which is farther east, expect longer. The A Line takes roughly 23 minutes from Memorial Park to Union Station in Los Angeles.
The hotel sits on the route of the Rose Parade, which runs along Colorado Boulevard. The 138th parade is set for Friday 1 January 2027 at 8 a.m., and the College Football Playoff quarterfinal is scheduled for the Rose Bowl the same day. The days around the date are the busiest of the year and need booking far ahead. The rest of the year the neighborhood is quieter, with restaurants and a theater rather than tourist attractions.
Old Pasadena
Old Pasadena is the choice for a first visit without a car. It has the densest cluster of restaurants and the shortest walk to the Metro, though it is also the noisiest area on weekend nights. The older hotels in this part of the city are outside our tracking, because the guide covers recent and upcoming openings.
South Lake Avenue and the Huntington district
South Lake Avenue is a shopping street of department stores and chains toward the southern part of the city, near the Huntington Hospital. It suits visitors who have business at the hospital or the neighboring museums, and who prefer a quieter evening than Old Pasadena offers.
The Arroyo and the Rose Bowl
The area around the Rose Bowl, west of the center, has few hotels and is mostly residential. The stadium opened in 1922, was designed by Myron Hunt, seats 89,702 and has hosted five Super Bowls, the 1994 World Cup final and the 1999 Women's World Cup final. UCLA plays its home football games there, and it will stage the Olympic soccer gold medal matches in 2028. Staying nearby makes sense only for game days, concerts and events, when traffic around the park is the main constraint; the adjacent Brookside golf course supplies about 20,000 parking spaces in dry weather.
Which hotel for your trip
Groups, weddings and corporate events
The AC Hotel Pasadena has meeting rooms for between 16 and 265 guests, some with 12-foot ceilings and views toward the mountains, a boardroom and a rooftop that can be reserved. That makes it more useful for a wedding party, a department off-site or a team from Caltech or JPL than a boutique inn would be.
Rose Parade and Rose Bowl visitors
Its position on Colorado Boulevard means a short walk to the parade viewing area, which is the main reason to book it for New Year's. Reserve as soon as rates are published, since the whole city fills. The stadium itself is a few miles away in the Arroyo, so game-day visitors drive or take a shuttle.
Travelers who want Los Angeles without staying in it
The rail connection makes this hotel workable for visitors who want a quieter base and plan to spend days in the city. The A Line reaches Union Station, where Amtrak and regional trains connect, and Hollywood Burbank Airport is closer to Pasadena than LAX is.
Practical notes
The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. Rain is most likely between November and March. Summer afternoons can pass 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 Celsius), and air quality varies on hot days and during wildfire season.
Parking is the main cost for drivers. Old Pasadena has municipal garages that are cheaper than hotel valet, and the hotel offers its own arrangement. The city also runs a local bus service called Pasadena Transit, and a FlyAway shuttle links Pasadena with LAX.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, when the weather is mild and the gardens are at their fullest. Many museums close on Mondays or Tuesdays, and the Norton Simon closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so check opening days before building an itinerary around them.
