We track one recent hotel in New Haven: the Cambria Hotel New Haven University Area, a six-story, 130-room building at 20 Dwight Street that opened in September 2022. Choice Hotels announced it on 28 September 2022 as the brand's first Cambria in Connecticut. HighSide Development built it, Baskervill was architect and interior designer, and KBE Building Corporation was the general contractor. The address puts it on the medical side of the city, a short walk from Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital.
New Haven had 134,023 residents at the 2020 census and sits on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Quinnipiac River. English Puritans settled it in 1638 and laid it out the next year on a grid of nine squares, three by three, around a central common. The common is now the New Haven Green, about 16 acres, and three churches of the early nineteenth century stand on its upper half: Center Church of 1812 by Ithiel Town, United Church of 1814 by David Hoadley, and Trinity Church of 1814 to 1815, also by Town. The crypt under Center Church holds the identified remains of about 137 people, and its oldest dated stone is from 1687.
Yale University, founded in 1701 and settled in New Haven in 1716, is the city's largest employer and largest taxpayer, and its calendar sets the hotel market. The Green meets the Old Campus across College Street, and the museums, theaters and most of the restaurants are within walking distance of each other.
What to do
Museums
Yale's museums are free to enter. The Yale University Art Gallery, at 1111 Chapel Street, was founded in 1832, when John Trumbull gave Yale more than 100 paintings of the American Revolution. The main building is Louis Kahn's, built between 1947 and 1953, and the holdings now exceed 300,000 objects from antiquity to the present. Across York Street, the Yale Center for British Art at 1080 Chapel Street is also by Kahn, finished after his death and opened on 15 April 1977. Paul Mellon gave Yale his collection in 1966, and it is the largest assembly of British art outside the United Kingdom, with nearly 2,000 paintings and tens of thousands of prints, drawings and rare books.
The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, opened on 14 October 1963, was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Its walls are translucent Vermont marble panels 1.25 inches thick, which give the interior a golden light, and a six-story glass tower of books stands inside. One of the 48 surviving Gutenberg Bibles is displayed on the mezzanine around the tower.
The Yale Peabody Museum, at 170 Whitney Avenue, reopened on 26 March 2024 after a renovation that began in 2020 and more than doubled its exhibition space. The Great Hall of Dinosaurs keeps its Brontosaurus and Rudolph Zallinger's 110-foot mural, The Age of Reptiles. Yale has said admission will stay free. These three close on Mondays, and hours change with the term, so confirm them before you plan a day around them. The Art Gallery and the Center for British Art stay open later on Thursdays from September to June.
Pizza and a hamburger
New Haven apizza is thin, charred and baked in coal-fired ovens. Frank Pepe opened his pizzeria on Wooster Street in 1925. Sally's Apizza opened a few doors away in April 1938, founded by Frank Pepe's nephew Salvatore Consiglio according to one account and by a sister of Pepe and her son in another. Modern Apizza, on State Street, dates from 1934 and was founded by Antonio Tolli.
Louis' Lunch, at 261 Crown Street, was opened by Louis Lassen in 1895 as a lunch wagon. The restaurant says he made the first hamburger in 1900, a claim the Library of Congress repeats and others dispute. The patties are broiled vertically in cast-iron grills dating from 1898, served on toast with cheese spread, tomato or onion, and there is no ketchup. The restaurant has traditionally closed in August.
Parks and neighborhoods
Wooster Square, the Italian-American quarter east of downtown, centers on a rectangular park named for the Revolutionary War general David Wooster, and its historic district has been on the National Register since 1971. The city planted 72 Yoshino cherry trees there in 1973. The Cherry Blossom Festival, run by the Historic Wooster Square Association, is held in April in Wooster Square Park at 570 Chapel Street. The 2026 edition was on Sunday 19 April from noon to 4:30 p.m. The 2025 festival was canceled for weather, and bloom timing moves the date from year to year.
East Rock is a trap-rock ridge north of the center, with a park and a summit crowned by the Soldiers and Sailors monument. Lighthouse Point Park, 82 acres on the eastern point of the harbor in the East Shore neighborhood, has the deactivated Five Mile Point Light, a seasonal carousel and a spot on the Atlantic flyway, a migration route for hawks and other birds. The Yale Bowl, at 81 Central Avenue about a mile and a half west of the main campus, opened on 21 November 1914 and is a National Historic Landmark. It holds 61,446 and stages the Harvard-Yale game every other year. The Yale Repertory Theatre, founded in 1966 by Robert Brustein in a former Baptist church at the edge of the campus, won the Tony Award for outstanding regional theater in 1991 and has staged more than 90 world premieres. The Green hosts the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and the New Haven Jazz Festival, and concerts there can draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands.
Where to stay
The Dwight Street area
Cambria Hotel New Haven University Area stands at 20 Dwight Street. Yale's conference office describes a short walk to the campus, the hospital and the medical school, and the booking listings put the walk to Yale at around 15 minutes. The hotel has local artwork meant to reflect the city's history of invention, bathrooms with Bluetooth mirrors, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor spaces for work, and flexible meeting rooms. The announcement does not name its restaurant and bar or give meeting capacities. Cambria is Choice's upscale brand and positions itself on design and local art.
On and around Chapel Street
Chapel Street, between the Green and the museums, has the established hotels. The Graduate New Haven, at 1151 Chapel Street, occupies the former Hotel Duncan, and The Study at Yale is also on Chapel Street. The Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale is at 155 Temple Street, and Hotel Marcel, at 500 Sargent Drive in the Long Wharf district, occupies the Brutalist former Armstrong Rubber headquarters by Marcel Breuer and Robert Gatje, built from 1968 to 1970. It opened as a 165-room hotel on 16 May 2022 and runs as a zero-energy building.
Elsewhere
Wooster Square and the Ninth Square, the blocks of restored buildings on the other side of downtown, have restaurants and apartments and few rooms. The area around Yale New Haven Hospital draws steady weekday demand from patients' families and visiting clinicians.
Which hotel for your trip
Hospital stays and medical meetings
A hotel a short walk from the hospital and the medical school is what the Cambria sells, and a new building with a predictable room matters for a family that may stay longer than planned.
Parents and applicants
The hotels on Chapel Street are nearer the Green, the Old Campus and the museums. The Cambria is nearer the medical school and is walkable to the campus. In 2027, Yale College Baccalaureate and Class Day fall on Sunday 23 May, and Commencement on Monday 24 May. The university's annual peaks also include the late-summer move-in.
Pizza and museum weekends
The museums are on Chapel Street and Wooster Street is on the other side of downtown. A weekend built around both works from any of the central hotels, the Cambria included, with a short ride for the pizza.
The Harvard-Yale game
In 2026 The Game is at Fenway Park in Boston, on Saturday 21 November, so New Haven does not host it this year. The schools otherwise alternate between the Yale Bowl and Harvard Stadium, and the New Haven edition, which drew more than 51,000 people to the Bowl in 2023, fills the city.
Practical notes
New Haven has a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters with periodic snow. April brings the cherry blossoms and October is mild.
Union Station, at 50 Union Avenue, opened in 1920 to a design by Cass Gilbert. It is served by Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Acela, Metro-North's New Haven Line to Grand Central, Shore Line East and the Hartford Line. A free CT Transit shuttle runs to downtown and the Green. Metro-North added express trains in spring 2025 that make the run from Grand Central in roughly 90 minutes, and local trains take from 98 minutes to more than two hours. Tweed New Haven Airport is the base of Avelo Airlines and handled about 1.47 million passengers in 2025, with its runway due to be extended from late 2026. Many travelers fly into the New York airports, Bradley or Boston instead and take the train.
Downtown is walkable, and the Yale shuttle serves the campus. Parking near the center is limited to street meters and municipal garages, so check the hotel's arrangements when you book.
