Little Italy grew out of San Diego's tuna-fishing community and is now one of downtown's most walkable dining districts, a compact grid of Italian trattorias, cafes and galleries along India Street, with a Saturday farmers' market anchoring the neighborhood's center. Carté Hotel San Diego Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton, has been open since September 2019 at the neighborhood's southern edge; CH Projects Little Italy Hotel & Wellness Center is confirmed for the northern edge, near the airport approach corridor, with no opening date yet.
What to do in Little Italy
For a weekend
Walk India Street's restaurant row in the morning, browsing the Little Italy Mercato farmers' market if your visit falls on a Saturday, then spend the afternoon at Waterfront Park on the harbor's edge, a short walk from Carté Hotel San Diego Downtown. In the evening, the neighborhood's trattorias and wine bars fill up along India and Kettner.
For a longer stay
With more time, the Gaslamp Quarter is an easy walk east, and the San Diego Bay waterfront path connects north toward the airport and south toward downtown's civic core.
Where to stay in Little Italy
The southern edge
Carté Hotel San Diego Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton, opened in September 2019 at 401 West Ash Street, a border address within walking distance of both India Street's restaurant scene and downtown's civic core, without sitting inside Little Italy's densest tourist blocks.
The northern edge
CH Projects Little Italy Hotel & Wellness Center, with no confirmed opening date, is planned for the northeast corner of Kettner Boulevard and West Juniper Street, where the neighborhood's restaurant-and-gallery blocks give way to the approach corridor for San Diego International Airport. The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority initially denied the project in February 2024 over crash-risk exposure to guests, a decision the San Diego City Council voted to override that July.
Just south, on the waterfront
Le Méridien San Diego Pinnacle, targeting January 2027, is rising a few blocks south at 501 West A Street, a new-build tower steps from both the waterfront and Little Italy's southern edge.
