Hotel June Malibu has 13 bungalows at 28920 Pacific Coast Highway, on four acres near Point Dume. It reopened in late 2021 after the Woolsey Fire of November 2018 forced the property to close, and Proper Hospitality operates it with the owners of the former Native Hotel.
The site began as the Malibu Riviera Motel in 1949.
The hotel is on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, near Point Dume, a short drive from the beach. The bungalows are grouped as a private enclave around the pool, set back from the road, on grounds that include a running stream.
Parking is on site, and the hotel supplies Linus bikes and surfboards.
The concept
The motel was opened in 1949 by Wayne and Helen Wilcox. In 1974 Bob Dylan stayed there while writing Blood on the Tracks, and Proper says Room 13 is the one where he worked. Many bungalows still carry black-and-white photographs of Malibu taken by Wayne Wilcox.
A new owner renovated the motel in 2016 and renamed it Native Hotel. The Woolsey Fire damaged it badly in November 2018, and the property closed for repairs. The ownership team of Shaun Gilbert, Reem Al-Zahawi and Sam Shendow brought in Proper Hospitality, and the hotel reopened as Hotel June in late 2021.
The heated pool and deck came last, in May 2022. Strict Malibu zoning made new additions hard to approve, and the remains of an old hot tub destroyed in the fire helped the owners obtain the permit.
The bungalows are mid-century in style, and some have private patios or hammocks. The hotel also offers 30 days of virtual wellness classes.
Dining & wellness
The hotel describes a lobby lounge as its main social space. Its website points to an Eat & Drink section, but no restaurant menu or chef is detailed on the pages consulted.

May 24, 2022: Native Hotel's ownership team and Proper Hospitality opened the heated pool and deck at Hotel June Malibu, the last stage of the restoration of the Point Dume property after the 2018 Woolsey Fire. Zoning rules had made new construction difficult in Malibu, and the foundations of an old hot tub destroyed in the fire helped to secure approval.
