The place
Brown Marx Tower, at the intersection of 20th Street North and 1st Avenue North in downtown Birmingham, known as the 'Heaviest Corner on Earth'.
The concept
Element Birmingham Brown Marx is the extended-stay component of Ascent Hospitality's dual-branded redevelopment of the 1906 Brown Marx Tower, sharing the building with the 190-room AC Hotel. Its 148 rooms are designed for short and long stays, in a building that was Birmingham's tallest for three years and stood vacant until Ascent bought it in 2018.
Redevelopment began in 2019, and Peachtree Group provided $49.8 million in construction financing in late 2023. Earlier targets of 2025 and 2026 have passed; construction was still under way in September 2026 and no firm opening date has been published.
Dining & wellness
No restaurant has been announced; a full-service Starbucks is planned on the building's 20th Street corner, shared with the AC Hotel.
