My stay at the JW Marriott Hotel Monterrey Valle was exceptional from start to finish. The property itself is beautiful, impeccably maintained, and staffed by professionals who consistently made us feel welcome. While every interaction we had was positive, one employee in particular deserves special recognition: Gerardo.
One evening, my companion and I returned to the hotel around 10:45 p.m. hoping to enjoy a cocktail before calling it a night. Although the Lobby Bar was only about fifteen minutes from closing, Gerardo welcomed us without hesitation. He crafted two outstanding cocktails and, despite undoubtedly having closing responsibilities, took the time to engage us in warm conversation that made us feel like valued guests rather than an inconvenience.
What happened next elevated an already memorable experience into an unforgettable one. After learning that we appreciate thoughtfully crafted cocktails and speakeasy-style bars, Gerardo personally escorted us to Hemingway next door and introduced us to the team, ensuring we would be well taken care of. What followed was nothing short of a masterclass in mixology; An experience we almost certainly would have missed had it not been for his recommendation and personal touch.
Luxury hotels are defined not only by beautiful facilities, but by employees who create memorable experiences. Gerardo embodies that philosophy perfectly. His hospitality, professionalism, and genuine enthusiasm for creating great guest experiences transformed an ordinary evening into one of the highlights of our trip.
Thank you to Gerardo and the entire team at the JW Marriott Hotel Monterrey Valle. We look forward to returning.
If you are looking for a special stay, celebrating an occasion, or expecting the level of experience normally associated with the JW Marriott brand, I would not recommend it.
The most serious issue occurred at the restaurant. A cracked glass was served with my drink, and the damage was significant enough to be clearly visible. As shown in the attached photo, this should never happen at a hotel of this standard.
I also stayed for four nights, and the housekeeping service was inconsistent. Basic items such as towels were not replenished properly during the stay, which was surprising for a hotel in this category.
In addition, I received a call after check-in because my payment card had apparently not been processed correctly. I was asked to go through the process again, creating unnecessary inconvenience that should have been avoided.
While some employees were friendly and professional, several restaurant staff members came across as indifferent and unwelcoming.
As a Marriott elite member who stays at Marriott properties frequently around the world, I was genuinely surprised by the gap between the JW Marriott brand standards and the actual experience at this hotel.
TOP NOTCH PLACE
We had a long stayed at this magnificent property. People are just fantastic. The rooms are quiet, clean and super-well appointed. Food is excellent, chef Jose Juan is on top of his business and I can tell is a favorite place for many locals. We are so thankful to so many nice people. I am a big Marriott fan. This is certainly a top property. People make a difference.
For a property that positions itself as luxury, this stay was profoundly disappointing.
The hotel itself is beautiful and the room was well designed, though we did encounter minor issues upon arrival, including a dirty towel and only decaf coffee pods. While inconvenient, these were not the core of the problem.
From the moment we arrived, service fell short of basic luxury standards. The bellman did not offer assistance with luggage, and we were instructed to self-park with the assurance that parking would be complimentary and validated at checkout. This was later proven false, and we were charged 600 MXN unexpectedly.
At checkout, the experience worsened. An unusually high incidental charge was placed on our account, and when we asked for clarification, the staff member casually responded, ‘Oh yeah, I put it high.’ The interaction felt dismissive and uncomfortable, leaving us feeling profiled rather than respected as guests.
Service inconsistencies continued throughout our stay. At the bar, we were told immediately upon sitting down that the venue was closing soon, despite there being approximately 45 minutes remaining and the space being full of guests actively dining and drinking. While we were allowed to order drinks, we were refused food service altogether.
The following night, we attempted to order room service around 11:00 PM. Despite being advertised as 24/7, we were told the kitchen was closed. After confirming with the lobby that it was, in fact, open, we called back only to be told that the chef ‘did not want to take orders.’ This felt like a direct refusal of service.
On Christmas morning, we attempted to order brunch to enjoy in our room. The staff member who took the call was notably rude throughout the interaction, to the point that we canceled the order altogether. This completely soured what should have been a warm holiday experience.
Additionally, housekeeping repeatedly knocked on our door early in the morning despite the door being locked and clearly not wanting to be disturbed.
When these concerns were brought to management, the response was an unenthusiastic apology with no meaningful acknowledgment of the pattern of service failures. The attempted recovery consisted of 5,000 Marriott points—equivalent to less than $40 USD—which felt dismissive given the experience.
As hospitality professionals ourselves, we were genuinely excited to experience this property. Unfortunately, the art of hospitality here felt absent. The overall impression was that we were unwelcome and did not belong—an unacceptable feeling in any hotel, especially one branding itself as luxury. Ironically, we received warmer, more consistent service at a nearby Tim Hortons.
Luxury is not about architecture alone; it is about care, consistency, and respect. This stay delivered none of those.
