We track one recent hotel in Madison: the Moxy Madison Downtown, a 151-room Marriott lifestyle hotel at 823 East Washington Avenue that opened in March 2024 and is the only Moxy in Wisconsin. Madison is a smaller market than its profile suggests, a state capital and a university town of roughly a quarter of a million people, and hotel supply near the Capitol is tight on football Saturdays and graduation weekends. Several projects now under way will change that over the next two years.

The city sits on an isthmus between two lakes, Mendota to the north and Monona to the south. The State Capitol stands in the middle of that strip of land, and every main street in the center runs toward it. The University of Wisconsin-Madison occupies the west end of the isthmus and the shore of Lake Mendota. That geography makes the city easy to read: the Capitol is the center, State Street runs between the Capitol and the campus, and East Washington Avenue runs out of the square toward the east.

What to do

A weekend in Madison

Start on Capitol Square. The Capitol was completed in 1917 and used 43 types of stone from six countries and eight states. Free tours run daily all year except a few holidays, and the observation deck outside the dome looks over both lakes, though it is mainly a summer stop. On Saturday mornings the Dane County Farmers' Market circles the square. In 2026 it runs from 11 April to 14 November, from 6:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and describes itself as the largest producer-only farmers' market in the country. Vendors sell out, so go early. A smaller Wednesday market sets up on the 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard until 4 November.

Walk down State Street, a pedestrian-and-bus street of restaurants and shops that links the square to the university and passes the Overture Center for the Arts, the home of the Madison Symphony; the building opens at 11 a.m. Monday to Saturday and at noon on Sunday. At its far end sits the Memorial Union, where the terrace on Lake Mendota is the city's favorite place to sit with a beer on a summer evening. The Union and the terrace belong to the university but are open to anyone; in 2026 the terrace keeps its doors open from 7 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. at weekends until 11 p.m.

For a second day, visit Monona Terrace, the convention center on Lake Monona. Frank Lloyd Wright first proposed the design in 1938, and the building was finished in 1997, long after his death, by his former apprentices. The center runs tours, including one built around Wright's use of geometry. The Olbrich Botanical Gardens are on the east side, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April to September and until 4 p.m. the rest of the year, with free access to the outdoor gardens and a small fee for the Bolz Conservatory. Rent a bike: Madison has one of the best cycling networks of any American city of its size, and the paths around the lakes are used year round by commuters.

New on the near east side is the Madison Public Market, which opened in July 2026 with 28 permanent merchants. The Center for Black Excellence and Culture opened in May 2026, and a visitor center at Picnic Point on the UW-Madison lakeshore is due to open in late 2026.

A full week

A longer stay allows a drive west to Spring Green, about 40 miles away, where Taliesin, Wright's own house and school, offers tours. The Driftless Area around it has hills, small towns and good dairy and cider producers. Closer in, the Arboretum on the south side of Lake Wingra has walking trails and prairie restorations.

The sports and events calendar matters more than most visitors expect. Badgers football at Camp Randall Stadium fills the city on autumn Saturdays: the remaining 2026 home games include Rutgers on 7 November, and the season finale against Minnesota falls on the Thanksgiving weekend, on 27 or 28 November depending on which source is current. Forward Madison, the local professional soccer club, plays at Breese Stevens Field, at 917 East Mifflin Street, a municipal stadium whose oldest section dates from 1925 and which opened in May 1926. It holds about 5,000 for sport and more for concerts. The Sylvee, a concert hall nearby, brings touring acts to the same corridor.

In the summer the calendar fills with festivals. Art Fair on the Square takes over the Capitol grounds in mid-July, and in 2026 the farmers' market moved to Breese Stevens for that weekend. The Great Taste of the Midwest beer festival drew roughly 10,500 people to Olin Park on 8 August 2026, the Taste of Madison follows in early September, and the Wisconsin Book Festival runs in mid-October.

Where to stay

East Washington Avenue

Moxy Madison Downtown is on this corridor, which connects the Capitol Square to the east side and has filled with apartments, restaurants and music venues over the past decade. The hotel was developed by North Central Group, a hotel company based in Middleton, Wisconsin, through its NCG Hospitality arm. Construction started in early 2020 and was slowed by the pandemic and by rising costs before the hotel opened in March 2024, at a reported cost of $24.9 million.

It has 151 rooms, a lobby bar that serves as the check-in desk, three themed suites and a rooftop restaurant, Atico, with views over Lake Monona and Breese Stevens Field. A seven-story column of color is painted on the outside. The building is narrow, built on a footprint of about 10,900 square feet, and the interior is playful by design.

Capitol Square and State Street

Staying around the square puts the farmers' market, the Capitol and the restaurants at the door and the campus at the end of a pleasant walk. This is the busiest part of the city for government, university and legislative visitors, and the older, larger hotels are concentrated here.

The next opening in this part of town is the Historian Hotel, in the Churchill Building at 16 North Carroll Street, directly across from the Capitol. Madison's first skyscraper is a nine-story Beaux-Arts building more than a century old. Hovde Properties and Mountain Shore Properties are converting it into an 81-room hotel in Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, managed by First Hospitality, and an earlier report gave the count as 84. The local firm Angus Young leads the architecture, Parts & Labor the interiors, and each floor is meant to honor people or groups from the city's history. A ground-floor restaurant is to be led by the Milwaukee chef Dan Jacobs. The opening is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, though one regional guide still said late 2026.

On the other side of downtown, the City Council approved an eight-story, 205-room Drury Plaza Hotel on a long-vacant block facing Wisconsin Avenue, on the former Madison College downtown campus. The developer's earlier plan pointed to the first half of 2028 for the opening, and the schedule may have moved since the approval in January 2026.

Campus and the west side

Near Camp Randall and the University Hospital, hotels serve patients' families, visiting academics and football crowds. Lakeside views are hard to find here, but the Memorial Union and the lake paths are close. Newer limited-service hotels have opened elsewhere in the city: a 140-room Spark by Hilton near the Alliant Energy Center in September 2025, and a dual-branded Home2 Suites and Tru by Hilton on the east side in February 2026.

The east and south shore

Lake Monona's south shore has parks, boat launches and quieter restaurants, with less nightlife. It suits those who want to run or paddle in the morning. The Embassy Suites by Hilton at Judge Doyle Square, a 262-room hotel beside Monona Terrace that opened in 2024, is the large-convention option on this side of the isthmus.

Which hotel for your trip

Concertgoers and students' families

The Moxy is a short walk from The Sylvee and from Breese Stevens, which is the strongest argument for it. It also works for parents visiting campus, since the Capitol and State Street are within walking distance.

Travelers who like a social lobby

Moxy treats the lobby as a living room, with games and a bar, and it holds regular events such as trivia nights. Guests who want a quiet lobby will find the format tiring.

Business travelers

Madison's large employers, among them the hospital systems, the university and the software company Epic in nearby Verona, generate steady weekday demand. A hotel near the Capitol suits state government visits more than one near Verona.

Practical notes

Madison has cold winters, with snow from December to March and temperatures that drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 18 Celsius) in January. Summers are warm and humid, and the lakes are used for swimming and sailing from June to early September. Spring is short and unpredictable.

Dane County Regional Airport counted 19 nonstop destinations in June 2026, with year-round service to hubs including Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas and Denver. Delta began a daily flight to Boston on 7 June 2026, and American followed on 19 June. Some airlines add nonstops timed to Badgers home and away games. There is no passenger rail service, and buses to Chicago and Milwaukee run from several stops. A car is useful for the Driftless Area but not for the isthmus itself.

Football weekends, graduation in May and the big summer festivals on the Capitol Square lift prices and fill rooms. Midweek stays in winter are the cheapest.
