I would like to share feedback from our recent stay. While the property itself is very nice, our overall experience was impacted by gaps in service, communication, and guest care.
Key concerns:
1. Arrival and Welcome
The arrival experience felt non-existent. There was no welcoming or courtesy extended, and the atmosphere felt more like a business hotel than a resort.
2. Room Assignment
We booked a double room. On arrival we were assigned a room with two queen beds. When we raised this at reception, we were told by the reception in-charge that bedding type is not confirmed by Riu head office and that he could not change it. The only solution offered was to push the two queen beds together and add a topper to make it similar to a king. This did not meet what we had booked, and we felt we were left with no alternative.
3. Staff Responsiveness and Follow-through
Throughout our stay, staff often appeared exhausted and would agree to requests, but follow-up was inconsistent.
For example: we had paid for a cake and requested a takeaway box for the remainder. The first staff member said someone would assist. After waiting 15 minutes with no follow-up, we asked again. The second staff member informed us that no takeaway boxes were available, not even in the kitchen. This is a basic amenity that most restaurants provide.
4. Safety Concern
On the first evening in the entertainment area, my son stepped near a piece of broken glass left from the previous guests. Fortunately, he was not injured. I placed a table over it to prevent an accident. The next evening, the same piece of glass was still under the table in the same spot.
My husband spoke to a gentleman named Daniel, who identified himself as a manager. There was no apology, and when we mentioned that our son had stepped near the glass, there was no expression of concern. The response was that he would speak with the housekeeping manager. Given the potential for serious injury, we expected more immediate action and empathy.
The property has a lot of potential, but to be successful as a group, the team needs more training in empathy, accountability, and basic service recovery. Guests should feel heard when issues are raised, and commitments made by staff should be followed through.
I hope this feedback is taken constructively to improve future guest experiences.
Sincerely,
Deepa
Unfortunately, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. The only positive aspect of our stay was the food, which was enjoyable. Everything else was a huge disappointment.
From the moment we checked in, we felt unwelcome. The staff lacked basic courtesy, professionalism, and hospitality. Several employees, especially at the bar, seemed irritated whenever guests approached them, making us feel like we were a burden rather than valued customers.
The hotel was clearly overcrowded and appeared to be overbooked. Instead of a relaxing getaway, it felt more like a busy fairground. The staff struggled to cope with the number of guests, resulting in slow service and a poor overall experience.
As Mauritians, we couldn’t help but wonder if we were being treated differently. Ironically, we found the foreign staff members to be far more polite, welcoming, and attentive than some of the local employees, who seemed to lack the training and customer service skills expected from a hotel of this standard.
We had booked an all-inclusive package, but the selection of non-alcoholic beverages was surprisingly limited, which was disappointing for families and guests who don’t consume alcohol.
The Kids Club was another letdown. The staff member there made no effort to welcome or engage with my daughter, creating an uninviting atmosphere where children should feel excited and included.
I have stayed at many hotels, both locally and abroad, and I can honestly say this ranks among my worst experiences. Beautiful surroundings and good food cannot compensate for poor service, unprofessional staff, and a complete lack of genuine hospitality. I left feeling frustrated and deeply disappointed. Unless the hotel makes significant improvements to its customer service, staff training, and overall guest experience, I would not recommend it to anyone.
Our stay was amazing and truly enjoyable from start to finish. There were plenty of activities for both kids and adults, which kept everyone entertained throughout our stay. The staff were overall friendly and welcoming, adding to the great experience.
The hotel itself is beautiful, with lovely spots to relax by the beach and two pools to choose from, giving you plenty of options depending on your mood.
The food offered a wide variety and there was always plenty to choose from. The only downside was that after an 8-day stay, the menu felt quite repetitive, with many of the same options served daily.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, and overall I would rate the cleanliness of the hotel rooms 8/10.
Overall, a beautiful hotel and a memorable stay with lots to enjoy for families and couples alike.
I recently stayed at Riu Turquoise Hotel with my family and kids, and we had an absolutely amazing experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome and well taken care of. The atmosphere is warm, relaxing, and perfect for families.
The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. The food options were excellent with a good variety to keep everyone happy—including the kids! The entertainment team was fantastic, always full of energy and offering activities throughout the day.
What we loved most was how family-friendly the entire resort is. The kids had a great time at the pool and RUILand, and we could truly relax knowing they were enjoying themselves in a safe and fun environment.
Overall, our stay at Riu Turquoise was memorable, enjoyable, and exactly what we needed. Highly recommended for families looking for a stress-free and fun holiday experience!
Worse hotel I have stayed at in the last 15 years of visiting Mauritius. The location at Le Morne is so far away from several attractions. It takes 1.5 to 2 hrs to get to the airport, Port Louis or Flacq, never mind Grand Baie. Best place location wise is Balaclava as it is the middle of the Island and has motorway most of the way to it. Hotels around Flic a Flac, Balaclava, Belle mare and Grand Baie are a better choice. The Rui Turquoise welcomes Mauritian guests every weekend who completely take over the whole hotel, never mind the pool. They only pay 5,600rs to stay for a night (24hrs all inclusive) which works out at £85 in sterling. I paid £1600 just for the hotel for the week therefore locals only pay 1/3 of the cost. The guests who were there when I was there, were rude, abusive and disrespected guests who had flown half way round the world to stay there.
Most of the hotel staff were nice but even they could not cope with the locals. The night before my family and I left, a Mauritian argued with his wife, went to his car and brought a machette into the hotel, to threaten his wife. (He had been drinking at the pool bar all day) As a guest, although the police came, no one looked after the guests who were all sitting in reception at the time.
Highly recommend not staying in Mauritius now during their winter months as all Mauritian's are offered cheap stays at most of the hotels on the Island. Best time to travel there. October to April.
