The Radisson Bilbao is a very comfortable, well-run hotel with genuinely kind staff and an excellent option for travelers who value a quiet room over a view.
My recommendation is to request an interior courtyard-facing room. The rooms do not offer notable views, but the tradeoff is worth it: my room was exceptionally quiet, with no street noise, and the ability to open the windows made the space feel fresh and comfortable.
The room itself was well lit, quiet, and thoughtfully designed. I appreciated the hard flooring with only a rug under the bed, which felt cleaner than full carpeting. The shampoo and conditioner had a light, neutral scent, and the hair dryer was better than what many hotels provide.
The air conditioning did not seem especially strong, although during my stay in May the open windows and fresh air made this less of an issue.
One important note for business travelers: the Wi-Fi signal in the room was weak at times, which could be frustrating if you rely heavily on video calls or remote work.
The staff were consistently warm and welcoming, and the complimentary drinks and treats were a thoughtful touch that was appreciated.
The gym was another highlight. It had enough space for several people to work out, good equipment, filtered water, and even a hula hoop — the first one I’ve ever seen in a hotel gym. The only limitation was that the lightest dumbbells started at 4 kg, and the exercise mats were fairly short.
I did not try the food during my stay, but overall this is a hotel I would happily return to. If you prioritize quiet, comfort, and friendly service over having a view, the Radisson Bilbao works very well. Just a ten minutes walk to the museum.
The location of the hotel was perfect for our family. Walkable distance to all the things we wanted to do. The rooms were well equipped and spacious, ample space to unpack and relax with our children. The maid was prompt, friendly, and helpful. Unfortunately that’s where the positives ended. Our group had 4 rooms, and none of us were able to get a hold of the front desk or room service at any time. The phone was never answered. In every room the air conditioning was not functioning and we got sub optimal service each time we had to go down to the front desk to ask about it. The answers we received were “we cannot turn it down any further, it’s the Spanish law”, “we’ve called maintenance, he’ll be here soon”, “we’ll set it manually down here for you.” No maintenance man ever showed and the AC never turned on. For the price of the hotel, sweating all night is unacceptable. Our children were unable to sleep due to the heat of the room.
Very chaotic and stressy welcome, being next in line, but sent away to have other people check out even though they arrived later in the lobby…?
The orientation of the reception is not well thought of, as the waiting seats are next to the three elevators. The 3 elevators are really really slow and don’t seem to have a logic in their movements, so there are always people standing in front of them. I have never experienced this weirdness before.
Glasses for water in the lobby were always used.
Rooms were large, but the door of our minibar was broken. Also, the shower was always steaming hot, couldn’t be arranged otherwise. The shower door didn’t function well, so the floor was always wet.
Beds were large and wide, AC was good, rooms were quiet.
Rooftop bar was a disappointment; staff took very long to do anything basically. The waitress barely spoke a word of English (I do speak Spanish, but my friends don’t). In this kind of hotel, a basic language knowledge is required.
Also, only when we wanted to order, she mentioned that they didn’t have several drinks we wanted. Afterwards she asked for a tip…
We notified the hotel beforehand we were arriving by car; they didn’t bother to mention that the police was blocking all access roads that day.
In general I’m quite disappointed by this so called 5* hotel. I would reclassify it as a 3*.
Besides the aesthetics of the lobby, there’s nothing I would say that justifies their level.
"Our trip was absolutely wonderful, and we fell in love with the city! This hotel made our stay even better. The atmosphere is lovely and cozy, making it a perfect place to relax. A special thanks to the staff — they are extremely polite, welcoming, and always ready to help. Will definitely come back!
Анастасия Ермоченко · 5/5 There is no way this hotel should have five stars. Sure, it looks fairly nice, but underneath that nothing works properly. If you're travelling with work, you want something comfortable and convenient and this is not it.
Breakfast was absolute CHAOS. The space is too small and there are not enough staff for the numberof guests they pack in. Result: it feels like you're queuing for school dinners, and you're likely to run late. On top of this the layout makes no sense - teapots and tea on opposite sides of the room is just one example. No one checked my room number nor did they inform me that I could have ordered something from the kitchen, so I was left fighting away for some stale bread.
The bathroom in my room was barely functional. The tap in the sink doesn't let you choose your own temperature, so that you are left with neither cold nor hot water to wash/brush your teeth etc. just some lukewarm trickle. The tap was still stained with toothpaste from the last guest.
My shower wouldn't warm up, and after messing around with it for 15 mins (there's no indication on the shower which way to turn for hot/cold) I decided to call down to reception, only to realise that the telephones by the bed are purely decorative germ collectors, they do not work. So I had to get dressed and go down to reception where no one seemed surprised. To be fair they sent someone up fairly soon, who told me this 'often happens'. Eventually got hot water and had to stand on top of a large grid to be under the show. When I tried to dry my hair the hairdryer was burning up inside and glowing 🤣
All this is to say, not a great start to a busy working day.
In addition, the pool was closed, with no explanation or recompense. Half of the 'roof terrace' is closed off. You can also hear the water pipes ALL NIGHT, and my room was dusty.
It seems to me the staff are quite stressed with everything but will likely get the blame for any complaints.
Do yourself a favour and book the Ilunion near San Mamés, it may not look as fancy but you'll have a much less stressful stay and a far nicer, fresher breakfast.
